		<description>Biography
Simina Oprescu (b. 1993) is a Romanian electroacoustic composer and sound artist whose work explores sound's physical, perceptual, and emotional dimensions across the audible and inaudible spectrum. Combining electroacoustic composition, spatial sound, and psychoacoustics, she approaches sound as both material and affect — a force that shapes perception, presence, and relation. Her practice blends synthetic and natural elements, drawing from diverse sound sources and field recordings from physical and natural environments. Working across stereo and multi-channel formats, Oprescu investigates how sound resonates within space and the body, engaging with ideas of attention, unity, and the vibratory nature of matter. Her work gravitates toward intimacy, inviting porous, open-ended listening experiences that drift between scientific inquiry and poetic exploration.Oprescu’s compositions have been presented internationally at festivals, galleries, and institutions including EVA International &#124; Ireland’s Biennial, Museum Tinguely (Basel), Märkisches Museum (Berlin), Palmer Gallery (London), Art Encounters Foundation, MOTA Museum (Slovenia), n.b.k Berlin, Hošek Contemporary (Berlin), Suprainfinit Gallery (Bucharest), MARe Museum of Recent Art (Bucharest), SONICA (Slovenia), Cynetart (Germany), Rokolectiv (Romania), Simultan (Romania), and ORF musikprotokoll (Austria). Her works have been released on the Swiss label Hallow Ground and featured in publications such as The Quietus, The Wire, and Positionen Berlin. In 2020, she was selected for the SHAPE+ platform artist roster, contributing to its focus on emerging sound and audiovisual practices. Rooted in research and guided by a commitment to listening as an act of care and inquiry, Oprescu’s practice bridges technical experimentation and sound's subtle, transformative potential.

Bucharest Hours (Witold Klimowicz, 1942)silent film, unedited footage, runtime: 61 minutes
music: Simina Oprescu

https://imageandsound.ro

Only specialized dictionaries still recall the name of Polish documentary filmmaker Witold Klimowicz, who came to Romania seeking shelter from the early horrors of the Second World War. Once employed at the National Office of Cinematography, Klimowicz would collaborate with Paul Călinescu (“How is a Film Piece Made?”, 1940) and oversee the first steps of young filmmaker Victor Iliu.Commenced in September ’42 and resumed later for technical reasons, “Bucharest Hours” was intended to embody the urban symphony of a supple and chic Bucharest so as to draw attention away from the war. As it stands today, the film is, above all, the shooting journal of a most eager filmmaker. As Klimowicz never managed to carry out his project, the footage stored at the National Film Archive includes shaky frames, retakes, landscapes captured in multiple takes, “duplicates”, as it were, and others. It is by fortune alone that those of us today can witness the film in its unpolished form, partly because it grants us more of its charming images before which we can never deem ourselves satiated. Let him who does not behold longingly the promise of early buildings, the folk loitering around pools, the adornments of the masses on boulevards, the carefree day-to-day spent in cafés, step forward. Every so often, we must all partake in such opium. As this Bucharest never existed in effect, but was edited to appear thus. This is, in part, why we’re fortunate that its retakes and duplicates are on display. Not only are the vistas of the University and the Roman Square anthological, but also, or above all, the boy who stumbles into frame and forces the operator to shield the lens with the palm of his hand. The artistic research, presented in a laboratory situation that was especially developed for this project, is focused on the ‘magnetic sand’ from Omaha Beach in Normandy, which contains a high proportion of heavy minerals and shrapnel particles from bombs. The metallic particles slowly erode among the beach sand but will survive for millennia as it transforms from the detritus of military technology to the geological stratum. The video shows the individual metallic particles emerging from the sand and becoming ‘actors’ moving according to a predefined choreographic score. Terms such as ‘viral force’, ‘emotional velocity’, ‘coercive dissolution’, ‘disoriented agency’, ‘contagion’, and ‘exhaustion’ are inspired by swarm intelligence and crowd psychology. It reflects on forms of assembly, violence, and power. In the video, the minute particles gather into a collective and gradually become a kind of living organism. The project centers on the question of whether a landscape – a ‘micro-ruin’ and a significant archaeological site of violent conflict – bears within it the potential to imagine a new habitat. The animated particles could be elements of a world emerging from ruins.Alice Wilke (excerpt from the catalog of the exhibition Territories of Waste, Museum Tinguely, Basel, 2022)Sound: Simina Oprescu (composed 2021)Photo credits: Fanny TrichetCourtesy by Frac des Pays de la LoireAccording to The Sedimentary Record, the sand of Normandy beaches conceals 4% debris of bombs and metal fragments (“magnetic sand”) from the D-Day landings - the battle that helped end the Second World War and redrew the map of Europe. The “magnetic sand”, along with other examples, is forming the layer of the Debrisphere, which stands for a type of artificial terrain, concealed by nature.

In a three-channel video setup, three places are brought together: the Namibian desert, the Atlantic Ocean, and a shipyard on the Black Sea coast where the world's first custom-built diamond recovery vessel, the Benguela Gem, was constructed. This ship, commissioned by De Beers Group and named after the Benguela dolphins, began diamond mining off the coast of Namibia in 2022.From the Black Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, by way of Namibia's desert, distinct geographies and industries interconnect through a common history of extraction. This history is narrated through the voice of a fugitive diamond that has broken free from human hands.

Imagine a pastoral landscape where the rhythmic grazing of animals seamlessly accommodates the military training schedule, resulting in a surreal coexistence of sheep and armored vehicles. This peculiar juxtaposition characterizes the daily life of Cincu, a Transylvanian village nestled in central Romania.A tale from the 16th century narrates the story of Ursula, a female figure disguised as a man, who successfully chased away occupying intruders (at that time, the Ottomans)&#38;nbsp;using the supersonic sound of a whip. This account purportedly originated in Cincu, which today houses one of NATO’s key combat training zones in Romania.Rehearsals for Peace breathes life into Ursula's legend within the present-day occupied pastoral landscape,&#38;nbsp;employing the sonic might of whip-cracking as a spell.&#38;nbsp;The film portrays a contemporary Ursula facing the modern armored vehicles, and harnessing the potential of the local ritual.&#38;nbsp;She assimilates elements from the military's choreographic lexicon, like tactical hand signals, and intertwines them with the ancient practice&#38;nbsp;of whip-cracking. performer: Simona DabijaDOP &#38;amp; editor: Tudor Cioroiucamera assistant: Andra Mireacolor grading: Simona Cristeasound composition: Simina Oprescufield recordist: Laurenţiu Coţacmask and costume designers: Dinu Bodiciu, Olah GyarfasCGI: Sergiu Negulicicomissioned by Neue Berliner Kunstverein, 2023co-produced by the n.b.k. The research-oriented practice of Anca Benera and Arnold Estefán spans a range of media, including art installation, video, and performance, and explores concealed patterns within historical, social, and geopolitical narratives. Their projects often focus on the relationship between environmental history and resource politics, exploring how military imagination shapes landscapes, climates, and communities. They address the global ecological crisis by weaving stories of non-human protagonists and fostering interconnectedness among humans, minerals, plants, and animals."Curators: Krisztina Hunya and Diana MarincuThe exhibition is continuing the cooperation with Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) in Berlin, where the first episode of this collaboration took place in 2023: Rehearsals for Peace, the artists’ first solo exhibition in Germany.

︎
Nonument is defined as architecture, monuments, public spaces, and infrastructure, the meaning of which has changed as a result of social or political changes. Circle was created as part of the Stronger Peripheries: A Southern Coalition proiect, based on the themes of work and happiness. During artist residencies in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and Mondaino, Italy, Neja Tomsic and her group explored public parks as neuralgic points of public life. The starting and focal point of the theme is a specific park, the park of railroad workers in Cluj-Napoca, which has undergone many transformations. Using various recording and research methods, Neja Tomsic explored its history and current state, particularly the remnants of the past that are layered in the earth - material relics, and are also stored in the imagination and memories of people and other living beings.

 Green Hermeticism by Simina Oprescu

Binaural composition based on the book Green Hermeticism by Wilson, Peter Lamborn. Behind the practice, I chose different citations and quotes from it to give a general sense and meaning to the whole depth of this book that I recommend jumping in. It goes from spoken word to psychoacoustic phenomena following a narrative path, consciousness enabling language, and communication of unconventional belief systems about matter, energy, and spirit. The real takes the place of the symbolic. As Ilya Prigogine deduced, “In equilibrium, the matter is ‘blind’, but in far-from-equilibrium conditions it begins to be able to perceive, to ‘take into account’, in its way of functioning, differences in the external world”. Nature is perceptive."On the very first pages Novalis evokes hermetic science quite specifically: Various are the roads of man. He who follows and compares them will see strange figures emerge, figures which seem to belong to that great cipher which we discern written everywhere, in wings, eggshells, clouds and snow, in crystals and in stone formations, on ice-covered waters, on the inside and outside of mountains, of plants, beasts and men, in the lights of heaven, on scored disks of pitch or glass or in iron filings round a magnet, and in strange conjunctures of chance. In them we suspect a key to the magic writing, even a grammar, but our surmise takes on no definite forms and seems unwilling to become a higher key.""Nature, from this point of view, is consciousness. Consciousness is the seed-cause, the primal causal energy, containing within it source, fruit, and end, the unity of which as we shall see is time as genesis.Consciousness seeks itself through all its metamorphoses and its path is the path of nature, which is an unvarying rhythm.""For Hermeticism, nature or creation is a living, spiritual, conscious, fourfold unfolding unity: a "formative metaphysical power." Titus Burckhart confirms this when he writes: "The expression 'nature' has a very precise meaning. It does not simply mean the involuntary becoming of things, but rather a unitary power or cause whose essence may be known by perceiving its all embracing rhythm - a rhythm which rules both the outward and the inward world." ""V.I.T.R.I.O.L VISITA INTERIORA TERRAE RECTIFICANDO INVENIESOCCULTUM LAPIDEM (Visit the Interior of the Earth and Rectifying You will Find the Hidden Stone)""In the words of a founding mother of Hellenistic alchemy, Maria the Jewess, also called Maria Prophetessa, the legendary sister of Moses: "One becomes two, two becomes three and by means of the third and fourth, realizes unity: thus two are but one."The unity of four-in-one that Maria invokes in her saying, which was called by Jung the most important in alchemy, is what the ancient Pythagoreans called the holy Tetraktys, which is in a sense none other than the four states of consciousness common to all traditions: the waking state, the dream state, the state of dreamless sleep, and the fourth state. In other words: in order to "create," One must become Two-it must look at itself. It must divide.
The unique, irreducible, indivisible cause-sourceOne must become Two.""Thus the source becomes mineral; the mineral becomes plant; the plant becomes animal; the animal becomes human; the human becomes divine."Photo cover: Musaeum Hermeticum, Frankfurt edition, 1749Narrators voice at the beginning: Zach HartRecorded, designed and composed by Simina Oprescu

KI by Simina Oprescu
‘A new world eats an old one and forms a schizoid dichotomy. The alleged spiritual energy within all human beings. According to a certain group of Japanese artists, channelling your Ki will allow you to perform normally impossible tasks, such as shooting a Kamehameha wave from your hands. Basically, Ki is what souls are made of.'It is 2056. The air is crammed with a strung-out anticipation and not a moment goes by that does not foreshadow the demise of an eleven-billion-strong species. Environmental warfare spreads by plants; insect-machine hybrids carrying diseases designed to infect specific racial and ethnic groups via targeted DNA sequencing; volatile weather systems; all meld in this ecology of collapse.' - Toby Heys Change has its manifestation through every form, and the invisible form will have a strong word to say in our subconscious and emotion processing throughout this apocalyptic burn out times. An invisible revolution of the soul. ‘worked between late2019 - early2020, Bucharest, Romania

"Post-music is what remains when we forget everything we know about music, what remains when we no longer try to" delight the eardrums "(or mourn them) harmonically or rhythmically what remains when the sound becomes an intuitive paste. modeled, when we discover in real time how it "escapes" us from the aesthetic, conceptual control, etc. one of the fundamental questions related to post-music: is it possible to make the sound under the "dictatorship" of music? all the more so as including the noises in their diversity, the sound of the city or the forest, they can be considered [a kind of] music. Their spectral structure, the possibilities of transforming an already recorded sound, allow it to be approached or removed from what we understand by music in this case, is it white noise music? if its "granular dissection" allows re-shaping, reassembly of its sonic particles, into a song? the first conclusion would be that: any noise contains "latent music" at the granular level, as in the subatomic physics there is the hypothesis of the elementary particle (quanta) that contains the imprint of the object of which it is part, a kind of memory of the whole subatomic scale."

OctoberChoreography of WaterTangaj Collective
Choreographer and filmmaker Simona Deaconescu (RO), visual artist Ioana Vreme Moser (DE), and composer and sound artist Simina Oprescu (DE) bring their creative universes together in The Choreography of Water. Tangaj Collective’s latest production critically examines the movement of water, from oceans to the human body. The performance explores our bodies as fluid territories where human and non-human worlds intersect, inviting the audience to reflect on the political implications of water flow.

The Choreography of Water is a speculative piece that artistically envisions the future, imagining alternative hydrological cycles. From the intracellular fluids of our bodies to the ports that connect us to the world, the shallow waters that sustain us, and the ocean depths as mysterious as a distant planet, the performance traces the flows that weave life on Earth.
Four performers will interact with a series of water-based sculptures to generate sound, exploring the relationship between choreography and fluid computing—a form of computation that emulates the planet’s natural rhythms through water streams. The sounds produced by the sculptures, amplified and enriched, transform into immersive soundscapes, becoming dynamic instruments for the performers to explore and manipulate.

In the archives of the Märkisches Museum and Stadtmuseum in Berlin, there exist 15 church bells dating from the 15th century to the early 19th century. Each bell is meticulously documented, including details on its weight, height, diameter, and material composition. While most are cast in bronze, two steel bells are positioned in front of the museum. The density of each material directly influences the bell’s tuning system and, consequently, its tonal characteristics.

Through research, I derived the formula for calculating the fundamental frequency (f) of a bell—referred to in bell acoustics as the Hum. The bell's harmonic series includes the Prime, Tierce, Quint, and the highest partial, the Nominal. Each of these partials is inherently embedded within the bell's shape. Applying the formula f = K1t/d2√E/s(1-m2) where K is the material constant, s is the material density, t is the bell’s thickness at the sound bow, d is the diameter, m is Poisson’s ratio, and E is Young’s modulus, I was able to implement f within a Max/MSP patch. This allowed me to extract the bell’s partials and reconstruct its harmonic spectrum.

Due to the natural beating effect that occurs between different frequencies, I can perceive a dynamic movement in the sound when shifting my head—at times, the Nominal and Prime tones become more dominant. The overlay of multiple Hums results in a multidimensional auditory movement, subtly canceling out spatial echoes and creating a unique sonic presence.

The event PORTALE, a collaboration between the Masters program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the UdK Berlin, the Zeiss Großplanetarium and the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut brings contemporary artistic practices to an iconic Berlin venue and opens up new worlds of immersive audio-visual experiences. Making full use of the 23-meter-high dome equipped with a multi-channel digital projection system as well as a full dome spatial sound system consisting of 49 speakers and four subwoofers, 15 artists present their works, from generative art to real time feed-back systems. These 13 works for frameless media alter and enhance the regular functioning of this theatrical space taking the spectator into various artistic contemplations. &#38;nbsp;

Emerging from the cosmic interplay of solar winds and distant stars, a complex array of physical phenomena,
including radio waves, intensity fluctuations, particle dissipation, and solar escape velocity at 618 km/s, composes a
captivating narrative of the universe. This narrative extends beyond the perceptible, prompting reflections on the
nature of reality. In the domain of sound, each manifestation encapsulates a history within a silent cacophony. If we
were to encapsulate these auditory emissions within a celestial sphere, they would manifest as intangible
oscillations, spatially fluctuating and eventually dissipating. Vibrations, like echoes, endure in accordance with the
principle of energy conservation, inviting contemplation into the endurance of phenomena.

Temporal considerations lead to an exploration of the peculiar persistence of stellar luminosity long after celestial
extinction, challenging conventional understandings of temporal progression. This hidden temporal dimension,
analogous to unheard sounds, necessitates a gradual evolution in our perceptual framework. The exploration
unfolds through the intricacies of vibration, reflection, and refraction, leaving imprints within the cosmic spectrum
and sine wave interference patterns. In harmony with the cosmos, sustained tones form a continuous syntactical
structure, akin to a harmonic arpeggio with a timbre reminiscent of an Overtone singer. Drawing inspiration from
Risset's cascade, the journey takes us through a spiral of time—a clash of strange attractors, chaotic systems cycling
periodically yet never repeating the exact pattern, and logarithmic spirals, a familiar shape found throughout
nature and art. This prompts a reevaluation of time as a dimension that merely defines succession and events,
beckoning towards a sense of unity that transcends conventional boundaries between self and object.

Delving further, the exploration encounters the mythical notion of primordial time—a dimension housing dream
events and visions. This idea aligns with modern depth psychology's conception of the unconscious, where contact
with such a dimension necessitates a state of unconsciousness. Testimonies regarding the relative "timelessness" of
the unconscious echo not only in primitive cultures but also in mystical experiences characterized by profound
unity with the universe and a sense of timelessness.

The feeling of timelessness inherent in the experiences of the deeper layers of the unconscious, referred to as the
collective unconscious by Jung, reflects a structural commonality shared by all individuals. Those who traverse
these depths often claim an ability to foresee future events, challenging the conventional delineations of past,
present, and future. This mystical experience, sought after in various Eastern religious movements, unfolds as a
profound sense of oneness with all things, rooted in the amalgamation of unconscious contents. Consequently, the
ordinary temporal experience, with its divisions of past, present, and future, diminishes, giving way to a mystical
continuum where time dissolves into the undivided fabric of existence.
